Wonderful set except for artist who opens it! Why Ritenour?
I just don't get how so many of Lee Ritenour's recordings merit inclusion in the otherwise delightfully diverse sets of a master blender and free form collage artist like Yugen here on the 'BOO or the similarly blessed and pioneering radio artists over on 'Jazz Without Boundaries' NPR affiliate KMHD.
From the late 1970's when I lived in LA and So Cal communities and this gifted if willful hack, Lee Ritenour, was succeeding in seeding the SMOOTH JAZZ robo radio format nation-wide and infiltrating it, that allusive popularity of his recordings remained a mystery. Now here, on a program themed for "VOCALITY"? Except perhaps for the little matter of livelihood that may have trickled down to the wider in many senses community of jazz players through the listeners he coaxed into our all-too-insular world of "Good Taste".
Anyhoo... God bless anyone that can make a living playing jazz live, recording it or broadcasting it.
Keep on doing Yugen! Keep on doing Carlton Jackson and others at KMHD with a soft spot for Lee the Trailblazer...Long may y'all swing n' roll...Does Lee swing or roll????
I don't call for any blacklisting of commercially successful diluters like Ritenour. However, this set is themed by our jazz muse\producer\host as " A feel good experience from men and women with enormous vocality. Voices that soar on the wave of melodies unencombered by the limitation of chords, and trigger deep emotion in us. Genre defying singing that keep the vibe alive."
Yet nothing from those living and recording in neighboring lands like Canada!
How's about an under-sung diva leader who's paid her dues? Like Jeri Brown and her Justin Time Records combo with tracks that should be standards such as "What Is Life?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xqKHE23C3Y
Only so much time, so mebbe in future let Jeri cross the border before the cross-over diluters of so-called Adult Format musics secure pride of place...

Thank you for your critique. Keyna Hathaway is the vocalist on Lee's cover of the Bill Withers song Lovely Day. I appreciate you calling out your musicologist to provide insight and content expertise. Yes, I will in the future include Canadian magic in a vocal context. I did a Joni Mitchell Special you may find some splice. Peace, and thanks for your rigor on this matter.
