OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon w/Nicole Jones Youth Organizer
Join Lisa Loving as she guest host Voices from the Edge this Thursday March 13, 2014 from 8:00am-9:00AM as she talks with OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon’s upcoming Know Your Rights training and an update on their Transit Justice Campaign. Nicole Johnson is the Youth Organizer at OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon. She grew up in Portland and has first-hand experience with many of the issues that OPAL tackles. Her experiences growing up in North East Portland and outer East Portland have fostered Nicole’s passions for grassroots organizing and encouraging the civic engagement of youth. These interests led her to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Portland State University. It was during her Senior Capstone project that she was first introduced to OPAL. Nicole helped develop the Bus Stop Assessment Tool that OPAL now uses, then applied to and was accepted into the Organizer in Training program. In January of 2013, she transitioned into the staff position of Youth Organizer and uses this role to create space for young people to excel as leaders in their communities. Nicole loves dancing, and enjoys exploring Portland. Jared Franz is a Policy Associate at OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon and has over sixteen years of education and experience as a social justice advocate. For the last three years, he has supported OPAL’s Bus Riders Unite campaign work for transit justice, and has become one of the foremost experts on transportation inequality in the Portland region. Before putting down roots in Oregon, Jared lived and relied on public transit in Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Germany, and South Africa. He holds a J.D. with a special certificate in Civil Rights and Environmental Justice from Lewis & Clark Law School, as well as undergraduate degrees in philosophy and anthropology, and half a dozen years of experience as a community organizer. He is passionate about critical race and gender theory, public space, universal human dignity, and the Portland Timbers.
