Summer pruning of pear tree new growth
Pruning some types of fruit trees in the summer is an excellent way to help control runaway growth. Plus, making syrup from tart fruits.

Host Glen Andresen is live in the studio, along with Jim Gilbert. There's a lot of growin' goin' on in the garden and on the farm. It's time for summer pruning of fruit trees, especially if you don't want your trees to get much bigger. Plus a discussion of humus in the soil and why you can't really "buy" your way to soil with good tilth. And making syrup from tart fruits!

As always, we'll have a new Plant of the Month (apricots) and a new Garden Stumper (the winner gets a free sharpening of a hand tool from Cully Farm Store in Northeast Portland!). Plus, our Dirtbag Dictionary term that we'll define is "perennial."  And, of course, what's annoying Glen this month...or at least what he's been thinking about.

Don't forget, if you have a gardening question, and don't want to call in, you can always email us at thedirtbag@kboo.org -- we'll answer your question on the air during the next show.

The Dirtbag, a garden variety show... Listen. Laugh. Learn.
