"I know that this is ... one of the measures on the ballot that puts equity front and center."

Measure 26-215 would renew the Portland Public School Bond if it is passed this November. The tax is one that already exists to fund the school district, and the 'Yes' campaign would renew that existing funding source. The bond would be used to modernize and improve the aging infrastructure of Portland Schools, and create new investments in BIPOC students.

$311 million of the bond would go towards a new and modern Jefferson High School, which has historically served Portland's BIPOC students in North Portland. The bond would also put money towards creating a 'Center for Black Student Excellence' in response to the ongoing protests for racial justice. There is not any organized opposition to the bond.

KBOO's Samantha Lau spoke with Michelle DePass from the Portland School Board about the public school bond and why she believes voters should act to renew the funding for local schools.
