Bill Resnick talks with Maika Yeigh who has taught for many years in the public schools in and around Portland. She’s now at the Portland State University School of Education, teaching the basics and supervising student teachers interning in classrooms. Her specialty is teaching reading. Bill and Maika discuss the basic principles and practices that help children learn to read, to love learning, and to want to understand and express themselves. We critique corporate “school reform” that emphasizes accountability through constant student testing, rote programs, and very little real reading of imaginative literature. These “reforms” are particularly imposed in classrooms of low income children.
