REVIEW OF JENNIFER EGAN'S NEW NOVEL

Larry Bowlden reviews a new work by Jennifer Egan, who is usually edgy and anything but a traditional novelist. But her new book is a very straight-forward and well researched historical novel, Manhattan BeachStarting in the ‘30s and taking the reader to the ‘60s of the last century, Egan describes the strengthening of feminism and of women’s roles in factories and shipyards  during the war. She also describes mob activity and the uneasy coalition between business and gangs during the war. Wonderfully written with well fleshed out characters, one of the best books of the year.
