As the world continues to take unnerving and unpredictable twists and turns, we check in again with Sightline Institute's Eric de Place, to gain some perspective on the craziness that abounds. We'll do a mash up everything that's frightening and confusing us - unprecedented mega wild fires, repetitive catagory 4 hurricanes and a Republican Party intent on dismantling America's social contract - and draw some lessons that enable us to continue to plug ahead towards a livable future. In that vein, we'll talk about recent victories in the struggle to stop the Northwest from becoming a fossil fuel export hub and the importance of the upcoming port commissioner election in Vancouver, WA.
Eric de Place, policy director for Sightline Institute in Seattle, is a researcher, writer, speaker, and policy analyst. He spearheads Sightline Institute’s work on energy policy. He is known as a leading expert on coal and oil export plans in the Pacific Northwest, and he is considered an authority on a range of issues connected to fossil fuel transport, including carbon emissions, local pollution, transportation system impacts, rail policy, and economics.

Are you ready to celebrate another coal export victory? The Washington Department of Natural Resources denied a key permit for Millennium’s proposed coal export terminal! This marks the third time Washington state gave the thumbs down to Millennium. Your steadfast commitment to protecting our lungs, water, and climate from dirty coal paid off! Yet, despite the Washington Department of Ecology’s decision denying a key permit, Millennium insists on moving forward with local land use permits from Cowlitz County, as well as a related permit from Ecology.
There will be a public hearing on Millennium’s Shorelines permits & community appreciation dinner party at the Cowlitz County Conference Center, 1900 7th Ave SW, Longview, WA 98632. The community appreciation dinner party will be held in the Power Past Coal hospitality suite at the conference center.
