Join us this Tuesday at 6pm for Transpositive PDX for our annual Pride show!  We will be talking about all the exciting events happening at Pride this year including the 4th Annual Portland Trans Pride March! on Saturday, June 17th in the North Park Blocks beginning at 2pm and the Pride NW Pride Parade on Sunday, June 18th beginning at 11am.  Pride NW will be joining us to talk about events going on leading up to Pride and we will be talking about the Trans Pride March and why we need to show up to support our Trans Community especially now when Trans Rights are under attack.  Pride is a time of joy and celebration and it is also a space of coming together when we show our unity and put aside our differences to become united as a Queer community.  Now more than ever we need Pride!

Also on Transpositive we will be joined by trans pioneer Buck Angel who will be talking about sex positivity and body positivity for trans folks and how we can move forward as a community even during this dark time of Trump and a republican administration that has targeted trans people front and center in the cultural assault on Queer rights.  Buck Angel's message of empowerment through self-acceptance and the mission to encourage everyone to be comfortable in their own skin - whatever that means to them - has struck a passionate chord with people around the world.

His mission is to inspire people to re-define gender and to foster a new generation as they discover the fluidity of sexuality and navigate gender politics. His message "It's not what between your legs that defines you" has sparked many a conversation and opened minds to the important message that gender is what you say it is for you, and that self-acceptance is not only what makes a person happy, it's how others come to understand you.

Finally we will also be celebrating a big win in Oregon with the passage of the Transgender Equality Bill! signed by Governor Kate Brown this week. HB 2673 updates existing Oregon law to ensure that transgender Oregonians have access to a safer, more affordable and streamlined process for obtaining corrected birth certificates that reflect their gender identity.  Transgender people who are unable to obtain identity documents that accurately reflect their gender identity face increased risk of discrimination and violence.

Statement from HRC on HB 2673

Victory! Oregon Governor Kate Brown Signs Transgender Equality Bill

Legislation streamlines the process for transgender people to update their birth certificate in Oregon

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, hailed Oregon Governor Kate Brown for signing into law House Bill (HB) 2673 — legislation that streamlines the process for transgender people to update their birth certificate.

“By signing this legislation into law, Governor Kate Brown is helping to make Oregon an even more inviting and inclusive place for transgender people to call home,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “We congratulate Basic Rights Oregon on this important victory and thank Governor Brown for her continued outstanding leadership on LGBTQ equality.”

HRC was proud to work with Basic Rights Oregon in the fight to pass HB 2673 into law. In April, HRC members, supporters, and volunteers joined Basic Rights Oregon for LGBTQ Lobby Day at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem and shared with lawmakers the importance of passing the legislation.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
