In 2001 there was the 9-11 attack on the Twin Towers, and most recently the attacks in Paris and San Bernadino. They're being used by some as a pretext for instilling a climate that turns every Muslim into a potential suspect, so that Muslim citizens in our community live in a heightened state of fear of verbal or physical attack. Against this backdrop, the city of Portland just passed a resolution condemming Islamophobia, which was applauded by a diverse group of leaders who over the years have fought for human rights. Among them were Jan Elfers, Executive Director, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and Co-Chair of Institute for Christian-Muslim Understanding; Ned Rosch of Jewish Voice for Peace; and president Wajdi Said and Rania Ayoub of the Muslim Education Trust, which has just opened the doors of its new center in Tigard. They will be discussing their efforts toward breaking down barriers and stereotypes, and promoting compassion, justice, and mutual understanding. Hosted by Stephanie Potter.
