Hip Hop, Mic and Mama C...
We want to make this episode of 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' a continuation of the last one, focusing on words. it is extremely crucial in this time, as corporate media continues to marginalize people of African descent, under the pretence of 'freedom'. under this pretence, our cultures consistently are appropriated and mishandled (and packaged as a product), outside the original context. There's also the lack of awareness (which we wanted to cover last time as well) in the use of words such as 'borrow' (as in, 'Can i borrow you?'), when using those words to address others. So much of the language we use towards each other innocuously has roots in the commodification of the human body.
To join us in this discussion is Mic Crenshaw, who as a (currently) Portland-based but internationally known hip hop MC and lyricist; is quite aware of the nuances of language, and how it can be used to guide or deceive. Mic took part in the Afrikan Hip Hop Caravan, which is "an annual project organised by various Hiphop collectives to allow thousands of young people to experience Hiphop Culture at its’ finest: as an elevating form of expression, a creative and revolutionary counterforce to all forms of oppression. Its vision is to build a strong and united Afrikan Hiphop Movement based upon a cohesive network of Afrikan Hiphop collectives with strong ties to like-minded organisations worldwide." We will also discuss Mic's experiences with the Caravan, how hip hop has been used as a tool internationally to organize the people (in direct contrast to the philosophy that it is used around the world solely to promote materialism), as well as the work he's doing locally (in Portland, Oregon), and with people such as Mama C, the co-Director of the United African Alliance Community Center UAACC; based in Tanzania. Mama C will be in Portland (on the 21st of March) for the 'Heal the Community' tour, to share her experiences with the UAACC.
