CA Methane Leak
Local air quality regulators joined the list of petitioners taking legal action against the Southern California Gas Company yesterday.
They allege that negligence has been the cause of the methane leak that began last October. That leak isn’t expected to be contained until the end of February.
The gas utility is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, and according to data at Open Secrets, seven members of congress are shareholders.
Between lobbying expenditures and campaign contributions, the company has spent more than thirty million dollars influencing Washington since 1992.
Dr. Astrid Caldas is the expert on climate change at the Union of Concerned Scientists .
She spoke with KBOO reporter Robin Ryan about the impact the leak is having on climate change projections.
She also discussed what changes in regulatory policy might be on the way as a result.
