Protests against border patrol checkpoints north of the border
Early in December, residents of Arivaca, Arizona marked the one-year anniversary of their campaign calling for the removal of the inland Border Patrol immigration checkpoints that have come to circle their small rural community. Residents held a 24-hour candlelit vigil at the checkpoint to protest the thousands of deaths of migrants resulting from border security policy in the desert corridor. Sophie Smith talks with Jan Haaken about the vigil, and the results of the community-based checkpoint monitoring effort.
Smith works with People Helping People, formed in 2012 by a core group of Arivaca residents involved in providing humanitarian aid on the US/Mexico border.
