Jon Nelson hosts this episide which includes these segments:
U of O hunger strikes in support of Gaza: Since early May, students on university campuses across the US have launched hunger strikes in solidarity with the people of Gaza who have suffered starvation after two months of Israel blocking food from entering the Strip. Strikers are using their bodies as a tactic to keep up public pressure on the US federal government as the threat of famine ushers in a new stage of brutality in Israel's war on Gazans. Three weeks ago the University of Oregon chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace joined other West Coast campuses in organizing a hunger strike. On Friday, May 23rd, the U of O hunger strikers held a rally at the Federal Building in Eugene. Jan Haaken and Kevin Foster were there from KBOO Community Radio to cover the rally. In this segment, you hear from Kaleigh Bronson, a faculty organizer and the rally moderator, Michael Dreiling, professor of sociology and member of Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP), and a group of student strikers. Jan Haaken talks with Joseph Anthony, Phia Isabella Dornberg, Sadie Zager, Ferris Haukom, Efron Chudacoff, and Cole about the strategy and history behind the hunger strike tactic and their demands on their university as well as on political representatives in Oregon.
McChesney & Resnick on Digital Disconnect (archive): In recognition of the recent passing of media scholar and progressive journalist Robert McChesney (1952-2025), we share archive audio of McChesney talking in 2013 with Bill Resnick about his book Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet Against Democracy and about groups pushing back, including FreePress.net.
Radical Musicology: Black Power & Soul (archive): In this archive segment, Clayton Morgareidge talks with musicologist Brad Duncan about soul music and the Black Power movement.
