Today we honor Oregon Environment Icon Bob Sallinger, who died on October 30. For over 30 years Bob has been a regional fixture advocating and fighting to protect our rivers, wildlife, forests and communities from environmental and social degradation and injustice. One of his many gifts was his ability to effectively weave together environmental concerns, progressive politics and a feisty pragmatism that achieved results. Bob was a frequent guest here on Locus Focus and we will miss his voice, his energy and his humor. We will be honoring Bob's memory over the next few weeks by rebroadcasting his most recent appearances on Locus Focus. Today's program originally aired on July 8, 2024.

We are blessed in Portland to have a magnificent river flowing through our city. But we haven't always taken the best care of this treasure. Fortunately for many years there have been several civic organizations that have led the way in promoting and producing river cleanup. One of the key players has been Willamette Riverkeeper, who for 27 years has proudly served as the eyes, ears, and voice of the Willamette River.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Bob Sallinger soon after he was hired as Willamette Riverkeeper's new executive director.  For over 30 years, Bob has been around agitating for environmental protections and justice for our rivers, wildlife and natural areas around the state. On this show he shares Willamette Riverkeeper's big vision for the Willamette River.
