How much energy do and will we have for social and political struggle beyond the ballot?

With the nearly apocalyptic 2024 election almost upon us, everyone is waiting with bated breath for how it will all play out--who will win the presidency, whether and how much the result will be delayed, contested, or result in violence. The outcome will certain set the tenor for the next months and years of life in the USA, but of course as we all know that on the local and on the global level, things will likely not change a lot, at least not right away, and depending who ends up in the White House. The houselessness and housing affordability crisis will still be with us, the war in Ukraine and the Israeli subjugation of Palestine will continue, climate change will keep getting worse.

And our collective response to the multiple intersecting crises will almost certainly continue to be woefully inadequate. So how much DO elections really change things? And how much of our political energy goes to things OTHER than electoral politics?
