On this edition of KBOO News in Depth, KBOO's Althea Billings speaks with the organizers of an upcoming forum on Indigenous language intepretation. Then in the second part of the show, hear a special re-broadcast of our conversation with Jeremiah Hayden, reporter at Street Roots about his reporting on the conditions homeless residents of Grants Pass, OR are facing.
PART ONE: Indigenous migrants face discrimination and violations of their linguistic and human rights every day. This is a conversation with Saul Rivera of NYC (president of the grassroots Indigenous community organization, Concejo de Los Pueblos Originarios) and Anna Belew of Portland (Executive Director of the Endangered Languages Project). They discuss the critical need for Indigenous language interpretation, why it matters, and what happens when this fundamental human right goes unrecognized.
Saul and Anna will also be part of a free online public forum coming up on Monday, September 30 - International Translation Day - highlighting the voices of grassroots Indigenous-led organizations around the US (in cities like Portland, Oxnard, California, NYC, and D.C.) who are doing the work of Indigenous language interpretation in their communities in this critical moment, when their rights are under attack.
