oseph Gallivan interviews Chris Ayzoukian and Karen De Benedetti of the Exposed Transmissions: A Photographic memoir from Issam Abdallah’s lens.

On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 11.30 a.m. Joseph Gallivan interviews Chris Ayzoukian [pronounced uh-ZOOK-ee-an] and Karen De Benedetti of the Reser Center in Beaverton about the exhibit “Exposed Transmissions: A Photographic memoir from Issam Abdallah’s lens,” about the work of Reuters’s Middle East photojournalist Issam Abdallah, who was killed in 2023.

They talk about how Abdallah captured human emotions in places of hardship, such as Ukraine, Türkiye after the 2023 earthquake and his hometown Beirut after the 2020 port explosion, his eye for color and shadow, and his love of pets.

August 02 – 17, 2024

Issam Abdallah was a remarkable visuals journalist with a gift of capturing a person’s soul in a single image. From reporting on the war against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or the protests in Egypt and his native Lebanon, Issam told powerful visual stories of people’s pain and strength, sometimes being the first on the scene to break or transmit the news for the world to see.  Leading every day with courage and compassion, Issam carried a camera wherever he went, becoming the eyes and ears of the world at that moment. His images in Exposed Transmissions depict stories of resistance and struggle, beauty and resilience, while offering the opportunity to come together as a community to share a sense of the world in which we all live.
