When we think of Portland’s venerable institutions, Powell’s Books, the Crystal Ballroom, Voodoo Donuts, there’s one that stands out as the grand-daddy of them all – Portland Youth Philharmonic. Now in its 100th year, PYP is America’s longest-running youth orchestra.
PYP will be performing their penultimate concert of Season 100 this Sunday, May 5th at Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The program, titled “New Beginnings”, features world premieres by composers Polina Nazaykinskaya, Sylvan Talavera, Giancarlo Castro D’Addona, and Nancy Ives, along with a piece by the American composer Charles T. Griffes.
To preview Sunday’s concert, we’re joined today by David Hattner, PYP’s Musical Director, and Macy Gong, winner of PYP’s 2023 Concerto Competition and soloist on the program’s “Poem for Flute and Orchestra”.
