The Dept. of Energy funds wave energy...and ways to protect whales from wave platforms...?

Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center has got an experiment going. Two of them, actually and – mirabile dictu! – both funded by none other than the Department of Energy.   Oregon’s Green Dream is to become a leader in wave-energy technology.  So that’s Project Number One.  But with dead whales washing up on Cascadian beaches on a regular basis, we’ve got a cetaecean nightmare to deal with before the turbines begin to spin.   Which brings us to Project Number Two.  The goal is to find out whether low-power acoustic devices  can prevent whales from approaching wave-energy platforms and cables that might one day occupy waters off Oregon and elsewhere.  Also funded by…the Department of Energy.  Conflict of Interest?

Moving on to national news:  Kagan confronts the ghost of Strom 'Old Fishhead' Thurmond.  And the Council on American-Islamic Relations confronts 'Obsession'.  Just when you thought it was safe to go back to  the Naval Criminal Investigative Service...NCIS has acknowledged that an anti-Islam film should not have been used in training offered to security personnel by that military law enforcement agency.  The film in question is  "Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West" .  When it first surfaced, it was swiftly slapped down but like all movie villains, it just keeps generating sequels...
