Host Ken Jones talks with Cai Emmons, author of the new story collection Vanishing, from Leapfrog Press.

Cai’s a fiction writer, playwright, and screenwriter, whose previous novels include Weather Woman, The Stylist, and His Mother’s Son, which won an Oregon Book award for fiction. Her work has appeared in TriQuarterly, Narrative, The Arts and Letters Journal of Contemporary Culture, and Portland Monthly. Before turning to fiction, Cai wrote for theater, film, and television. Two of her plays were produced in New York theaters, she’s optioned numerous feature-length screenplays, and she wrote for the TV series The Trials of Rosie O’Neill.

In the words of writer Marie-Helene Bertino, Vanishing is “sophisticated and bright with promise... these stories elucidate incredibly difficult-to-articulate topics such as jealousy, self-hatred, unlikely connection, and friendship. If a writer's job is to make the unseen visible, the stories in Vanishing are flashlights, illuminating the subtle enormous tragedies we humans encounter every day."
