Jacqueline Keeler, regular monthly co-host (on the second Wednesday) of Wednesday Talk Radio, is a Native American writer and activist of Dineh (Navajo) and Yankton Dakota heritage. She has written for numerous on-line and print outlets, including Truthout, The Nation, Indianz.com, Indian Country Today, YES! Magazine and The Daily Beast.
This week she joins us to discuss the recent Washington Post article claiming a new poll finds "the majority of Native Americans still aren’t offended by the name." The name being the offensive Washington NFL team franchise the Washington R*dskins. In 2016, she wrote what she thought would be the final world on the Washington Post's attempt to poll for racism in her article in The Nation, "On the Shameful and Skewed ‘Redskins’ Poll: The Washington Post did a grave disservice by utterly ignoring studies that clearly demonstrate the harm mascotting causes."
She edited Edge of Morning: Native Voices Speak for the Bears' Ears and is currently finishing Standoff: Standing Rock, the Bundy Movement, and the American Story of Occupation, Sovereignty, and the Fight for Sacred Lands, due out in the spring of next year. She also co-founded Eradicating Offensive Native Mascotry (EONM), which seeks to end the use of Native American racial groups as mascots.
