Author Kathy Sparrow speaks with guest host Renee Beth Poindexter

Kathy Sparrow is an international best-selling, award-winning author, leadership expert, message
strategist, and writing/ publishing consultant, and university professor. She is driven by her
passion to assist individuals to discover their authentic presence, embrace change with a sense of
adventure, and express themselves in all areas of life with confidence, awareness, and courage,
using the tools of writing, fly fishing, and intentional conversation.
She is the co-author of the international best-selling book, Ignite Your Leadership: Proven Tools
for Leaders to Energize Teams, Fuel Momentum, and Accelerate Results
. Her chapter “The
Power of Your Story: Discovering Your Why, Dissolving Your Why Nots,” emphasizes the
importance of leaders knowing their “why” to overcome obstacles and influence those around
them to be more engaged and productive at work. Additionally, she explains that when the “why
nots” are addressed, we can remedy the imbalances created when we’re seeking the approval of
those around us––which many of us do––and in doing so hide our true gifts from the world.
Kathy’s chapter, “It’s All in the Cast—A Fly Fisher’s Guide to Leadership” appears in the best-
selling anthology The Innovators: Revolutionary Ideas from Today’s Consulting Leaders. Here,
she explains how the mastery sport of fly fishing acts as a mirror for life and when engaged with
awareness is an amazing self-development tool. She holds the distinction of once being one of
the few female saltwater fly fishing guides. She is the author of On the Mother Lagoon: Fly
Fishing and the Spiritual Journey and the novel The Whispered Teachings of Grandmother
Trout. Her next book, It’s All in the Cast: A Fly Fisher’s Guide to Leadership, Sales, and Optimal
, outlines an innovative leadership program for CEOs and their teams, as well as
individuals seeking to have a greater presence in their lives so they experience more meaning,
joy, and connection with others.
Known as a “behind the scenes secret weapon” to leaders in many fields, Kathy assists many
aspiring writers of self-development, leadership, and consulting with crafting their messages and
guiding them through the publishing process.
Kathy has trained extensively in the realm of narrative theory and leadership, with a focus on
self-mastery. She is a Certified Canfield Trainer in Jack Canfield’s Success Principles and serves
on his assisting team. She is also a Master RIM® facilitator––which is an evolutionary
mind/body tool used to overcome limitations and self-sabotaging behaviors, often associated
with trauma. She holds a Master of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in literature and
cultural studies. She teaches marketing for writers at Southern New Hampshire University and
has instructed in First-Year Writing programs at the University of Texas-Pan American,
Southwestern Community College, and National University. She recently joined the faculty at
Pikes Peak Community College, where she will be teaching composition, literature, and
technical writing.
Kathy is very active in Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, acting as Media Lead for the
Colorado Springs region, as well as Mentor and Assistant Trip Lead. The organization offers fly
fishing excursions and instruction to disabled veterans and disabled active duty military.
