Claudia F. Savage is an Arab-American poet, writer, teacher and performer. She is a fellow of the Black Earth Institute, which brings together artist and thinkers to focus and work on the intersection between social justice, the environment and spirituality.
Claudia speaks from the body of a passionate woman in full breath, in a voice that is at once ancient and new. Her first full length work, Bruising Continents, breaks the boundaries of poetic form as it breaks the taboo of speaking out about loving two men. Her essays and interviews provide heart and strategy for women dealing with the issues of balancing motherhood and its demands with maintaining a commitment to serious art. Her interviews with Arab American writers shed light on both cultures and the passages between them.
Claudia was a serious musician in her youth, and with her husband John Savage forms the musical duo “Thick in the Throat Honey.” John is an improvisational jazz musician who the Creative Music Guild compares to Rahsaan Roland-Kirk, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Noah Howard, Herbie Mann, and Colin Stetson. The Guild describes “Thick in the Throat” as “Morphing the traditions of jazz, spoken word, experimental music, chants, and devotional intoning...”
