In honor of Pride and Juneteenth, Movie Moles Jan Haaken and Frann Michel discuss The Watermelon Woman (1996), the first feature film directed by an African American lesbian, and a film Frann has long admired. They consider how the movie illuminates the history of cinema and comments on theories of the gaze developed by Laura Mulvey and bell hooks, and they note the political controversy over its funding. They recommend finding The Watermelon Woman at the Multnomah County Library and finding out more about the work of director Cheryl Dunye.
