This week on Prison Pipeline co-host Emma Lugo sits down with Jessica Tibbets, a domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse survivor, incarcerated at a young age. After 15 years inside, she is navigating society through the barriers of her criminal record as well as growing up inside. Learning to pay bills, taxes and work as a mother and healthy member of society.
In 1998 Jessica was sentenced under Measure 11 mandates to life in prison. She was only 14 years old at the time of her arrest. Jessica was a victim of sexual and physical abuse as a child and deeply traumatized by her experiences. This year she was a panelist at the Women in Prison conference talking about how girls are affected by domestic violence, and how it can lead to their involvement in the justice system. The conference was organized by the Oregon Justice Resource Center.
Jessica was released after 15 years at coffee creek and is now working as a union carpenter. We will have Jessica back on Prison Pipeline as we start a new year to talk about the issue of domestic violence and how it traumatizes children, we will talk to Jessica about how life is going for her these days and what her hopes are for the new year.
