50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America's Public Schools: The Real Crisis in Education
Host Jo Ann Hardesty speaks with Dr. David Berliner, co-author (with Gene V Glass), of the new book, "50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America's Public Schools: The Real Crisis in Education."
Dr. Berliner explain how the mythical failure of public education has been created and perpetuated in large part by political and economic interests who stand to gain from its destruction. They expose a rapidly expanding variety of organizations and media that intentionally misrepresent facts.
David C. Berliner is Regents' Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University. He has taught at the Universities of Arizona and Massachusetts, at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Stanford University, as well as at universities in Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. Dr. Berliner is a member of the National Academy of Education, a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and a past president of both the American Educational Research Association and the Division of Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He co-edited the first Handbook of Educational Psychology and the books Talks to Teachers and Perspectives on Instructional time. He is co-author of The Manufactured Crisis (with B. J. Biddle), Putting
Research to Work (with Ursula Casanova), and six editions of the textbook Educational Psychology (with N. L. Gage). Another recent book is Collateral Damage (with Sharon Nichols), about the corruption of education through high-stakes testing.
