Abolishing the Term "Schizophrenia" with Psychiatry Professor Jim van Os

Is schizophrenia a devastating brain disease that can be only cured by medication and psychotherapy? Or does psychosis exist on a spectrum, much like autism? What would happen if we abolished the mental health system as we know it today and replaced it with a system that helped individuals to heal themselves through a supportive environment?

Jim van Os is a professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Maastricht University Medical Centre, and visiting professor at the Division of Psychological Medicine, Institute of Psychiatry, DeCrespigny Park, London, United Kingdom.

He has more than 700 publications and is one of the top one percent highly cited scientists in the world. He’s a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science. His focus is on scientific knowledge combined with the experiential knowledge of people with lived experience of the mental health system.
