Imperialism Past and Present with author Emanuele Saccarelli
Host Per Fagereng speaks with Emanuele Saccarelli, co-author with Latha Varadarajan, of Imperialism Past and Present.
Saccarelli and Varadarajan make the argument that western imperialism did not end with the close of colonialism, but continues to define international relations today. Their book illustrates the long historical roots of present day imperialism
After a long hiatus, when it was seemingly banished to the wilderness of esoteric academic debate, imperialism is back as one of the buzzwords of the day. In the past decade in particular, scholars, policy-makers and political pundits have been using the term with increasing frequency in their commentary on contemporary international relations. Many have invoked it as an old specter only to nervously deny its contemporary applicability. Meanwhile, the term has continued to be applied to a diverse range of economic, political, cultural and linguistic phenomena.
Emanuele Saccarelli joined the Department of Political Science at San Diego State University in 2005 after receiving his Ph.D. in Political Science with a minor in History from the University of Minnesota. His research and teaching generally examine the relationship between political theory and practice. He is also the author of Gramsci and Trotsky in the Shadow of Stalinism.
