"Where Musician Ends and Instrument Begins..."
We've been thinking a lot lately about the state of jazz in this day and age... So much emphasis and conversation from the mainstream has been on the genre in and of itself, and not the conditions which created jazz... not the African or spiritual connections (and homage to the ancestors) which weaved in and out of it.
This connection never left, and jazz messengers (respect to Abdullah Ibn Buhaina and Horace Silver) still exist amongst us, continuing the tradition. Robert Glasper, Regina Carter, Jaleel Shaw and Madlib are just a few.
We are happy to have Errick Lewis, another messenger, here with us. Lewis, born in California, currently lives in Oregon; as a child he taught himself to play the drums (the heartbeat), eventually moving to the bass. Throughout this life's experience he has toured and worked with a diverse group of people such as D'angelo, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Raheem Devaugn, Hezekiah Walker, Kim Burrell, Hailey Niswanger, (as well as Portland artists) Tony Ozier, Janice Scroggins and Patrick Lamb.
stay tuned...
