KIZUNA, THE REBIRTH OF MASHIKO CERAMICS
Guest host Kathleen Stephenson speaks with Aki Ishijima, a ceramic artist from Mashiko, Japan, and Ruri, a ceramic artist living in rural Yamhill County, about the importance of Mashiko ceramics, the 2011 earthquake in Japan, and the devastation it caused for Mashiko potters.
They also discuss "Kizuna: the Rebirth of Mashiko," a show of the work of Mashiko ceramic artists that will be on view at the Portland Japanese Garden from June 6th through July 5th. Spearheaded by Ruri, who once apprenticed with master potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka, this exhibition is held in collaboration with the Oregon Potters Association, which featured Mashiko artists in their annual Ceramic Showcase in May. Six visiting artists from Mashiko will travel to Portland to attend the opening of the Garden’s exhibition.
