KBOO HAIR RAISING ‘STOP THE OIL, SAVE THE GULF’ SPECIAL 

Thank you to everyone who participated in our hair raising special on Monday June 7^th, from 8 am to 7 pm!  A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped with today’s program, with an extra special thank you to Jacob Anderson-Minshall for his hard work and dedication to making today’s program a reality.

And thanks to all of the hair stylists who volunteered their time to cut hair – Lisa Butti, formerly of Salon Bucci, Lyn Moelich, Heather and Tab from the Tribe Hair Salon, Brett from Beige Blond, and all the stylists from Bishops Barbershop who participated in today’s event. We had over eighty people get their hair cut in our backroom barber shop, and collected over 50 pounds of hair. This hair will be sent to the Meg Perry Center for Environmental Peace and Justice in New Orleans, where it will be turned into hair rugs to help soak up the oil.  Check the KBOO website in the next few days for recordings of today's programs.

Stop the Oil – Save the Gulf! Schedule of programming:

8 am - Chris Andreae and Jenka Soderberg host a call-in show on the current situation in the Gulf, and speak with residents of Louisiana and Mississippi about the impact of the spill and the future of the region.  Guest will be George Barisch is the president of the United Commercial Fishermen's Association, the leading union representing the people who actually do the work. George has been a fisherman on the Gulf Coast for over 30 years. He also has a law degree but opted for a more authentic life in a culture and tradition stretching back generations. After the BP spill, George was the first to sue the British Petroleum colossus.

9 am - The Old Mole Variety Hour continues KBOO’s coverage of the Gulf Oil Disaster with:

• Michael Klare, author of Blood and Oil,  arguing  that  deep water oil drilling is just one of the many "extreme" technologies that enrich big  corporations while impoverishing our lives and environment;

• An  interview with the director of  Sweet Crude, a  documentary about the destructive exploitation of oil in the Niger Delta;

• Commentaries about oil and the powers of corporate capital;

• Blues and country music about oil and the oil industry.

10 am -Barbara Bernstein speaks  with Portland science writer Liz Grossman, who has been following the health impacts of the dispersants being used to break up the oil in the spill. We'll hear about how BP is trying to downplay the danger both to humans and wildlife of the chemicals they are using , while at the same time there are growing reports of workers exposed to the dispersants who are getting sick. We'll also talk about the lack of available information on air quality near the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which is a serious concern since BP has been burning off oil that has reached the water's surface around the site of the damaged rig.

At 10:30 we talk with Len Bahr, retired director of the Governor's Applied Coastal Science program in Louisiana, who now writes a blog entitled LaCoastPost. We'll discuss the science and politics behind dramatic plans to "fix" the oil spill problem, such as building a huge sand berm along the Louisiana coastline to prevent the oil from reaching into the marshes and beaches. Len has strong opinions as a coastal scientist, about the fallacy of this plan and believes that it is driven by politics, not science.

11 am - Ken Barbie hosts: We'll hear about the methods used to stop the spill, why they've failed, and what might work.

12 pm - Jacob Anderson-Minshall hosts a discussion on oil spill cleanup with Dr. Elise Granek, an expert on coastal and marine biology at Portland State University, Marilyn Latta with the Coastal Conservancy in California, and Richard Steiner, a marine biologist and former University of Alaska fisheries extension agent.  They will talk about wetlands, oil spills in San Francisco, Alaska and the Gulf and how these areas will be impacted, and what can be done to mitigate the disaster.

1 pm - We'll discuss KBOO's effort to 'raise hair' for the Gulf cleanup

2 pm - Bill Resnick interviews Frank Ackerman on the science and economics of climate change

2:30 - Michael Ruppert, the creator of the groundbreaking film Collapse, speaks on transforming our economy away from fossil fuels and petroleum dependence.

3 pm - Paul Cienfuegos talks in Portland at the 2010 Village Building Convergence about taking back power from the corporations, and regaining control over our own lives and society in order to save our planet from certain death.

4 pm - Democracy Now with host Amy Goodman

5 pm - Local and national news reports related to the BP Oil disaster

6 pm - Host Bill Zimmerman explores the question of what the transformation of our economy away from fossil fuels will mean for workers.

6:30 Guy Dauncey from the Earth Future Institute speaks with host Crystal Leighty about how we can come together to move forward, away from our dependence on fossil fuels.
