Freedom Burning
China just hates it when a simple Occupation Operation goes South…What the hell? Everyone is on fire?
Another week in Portland, another self-immolation in Tibet. And the silence mounts like a thunderhead on the horizon of the American collective conscience. Now China is considering bringing murder charges against those dare to defy Chinese might by setting themselves on fire. It’s the Buddhist brand of suicide bombing – the fire hurts no one but the one on fire.
Since March 2011, more than 90 people are known to have set themselves on fire in protest against the repressive Chinese occupation of Tibet. Self-immolations and protests are now taking place over a widening area of Tibet. Viewed in the context of other recent significant protests, the self-immolations are understandable: Tibetans will not be ruled by China…especially a China seemingly bent upon the destruction of the Tibetan people.
Wanchen Kyi, 16, Dokar Mo township, Eastern Tibet, 9 December 2012, died. Schoolgirl Wanchen Kyi shouted "Long live His Holiness the Dalai lama, long live Tibetan people" as she set herself alight. On five days' holiday from a local middle school at the time of her protest, she is survived by her parents and two sisters.
Three thousand local people attended her funeral service.
