Port Westward

The Houston-based company, NEXT Renewables LLC Oregon is proposing to construct a major new refinery at Port Westward, near Clatskanie, on the Columbia. This project would immediately become one of Oregon’s top greenhouse gas polluters. The refinery would be one of the largest of its kind in North America. Right now the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is taking comments on its draft decision to grant NEXT the necessary Water Quality Permit.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Dan Serres, Advocacy Director with Columbia Riverkeeper, about the problems with the permit DEQ is proposing, and how you can get involved in stopping this dangerous project.

Learn more about another false climate solution proposed for Port Westward near Clatskanie, Oregon and how you can get involved in helping to stop it. You can attend the next Rumble on the River webinar on NEXT Energy's proposed renewable diesel refinery, October 16, 2024 which will provide background information and tips on writing comments on DEG's draft Water Quality Permit.

Here's the link to the webinar.

Since late 2022, Rumble On The River has presented sixteen free community forums in neighborhoods throughout Portland. The Rumble focus has been the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub. Rumbles bring together expert voices to lay out the potential hazards of having 90% of Oregon’s fuel and a mix of toxics stored within Portland’s city limits on a seismic liquefaction zone. Other forum topics have included Columbia & Willamette River ecosystems, false climate solutions to climate disruption, transportation, urban forestry, shade equity, risk-bonding, nuclear energy and salmon restoration.
