On this edition of Prison Pipeline: Expanding Access To Treatment.

According to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, among people in state prisons, 40% met the criteria for having a drug use disorder and 21% met the criteria for having an alcohol use disorder in the 12 months prior to admission to prison. Among people in federal prison, 23% met the criteria for having a drug use disorder and 15% met the criteria for having an alcohol use disorder in the 12 months prior to admission to prison. Obviously, treatment for substance use should be a major concern. There are things that we can do to improve treatment outcomes and make success more likely. To learn more, Prison Pipeline Collective member Doug McVay spoke with Benjamin Bovell-Ammon, MD, MPH, lead author of “Prison Buprenorphine Implementation and Postrelease Opioid Use Disorder Outcomes,” which was published March 18, 2024 in the journal JAMA Network Open.
