On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews photographers Dennis Weis and Greg Muhr about their volunteer work photographing fires for Portland Fire and Rescue. They talk about shooting fires such as the Korean Church in downtown Portland and the Elks building near Gresham; how they hear about fires within minutes of them starting; what compositions they look for on a busy fire scene and how they keep out of the firefighters’ way; how they achieve the rich coloration of flames and smoke at night with truck lights, strobe lights, other city lights and reflective surfaces present; and how they place human figures in the scene.
