On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, Joseph Gallivan interviews Elizabeth Leach and Bruce Guenther for the 40th anniversary of the Elizabeth Leach Gallery. They talk about the maturing of the art scene in Portland since the 1970s, the relationship to museums, and the work that happens beyond the gallery show, such as art fairs, collector nurturing and political advocacy.

This interview was recorded on October 20 on Zoom video conferencing software and engineered by KBOO volunteer Ray Bodwell. https://kboo.fm/blog/55224

From the press release:

Elizabeth Leach Gallery was established in 1981 in downtown Portland, Oregon. The gallery has cemented its reputation as a major player in the region over the course of four decades. Leach’s model of combining regional shows with prints and unique works by nationally known artists challenged local expectations for galleries at the time, and created new markets for contemporary art in the Portland area. Leach was soon representing the region on an international scale— as the first Portland gallery to participate in global art fairs —with represented artists showing at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Documenta and the Venice Biennale.

Forty Years

Elizabeth Leach Gallery is delighted to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a publication detailing the gallery’s rich history. Forty Years is a gorgeously bound book with a lenticular cover that includes a 100+ page visual timeline of the gallery’s exhibitions, programming, partnerships and fair participation over four decades.

The comprehensive publication features essays by friends and collaborators, an interview with Elizabeth Leach, and four decades of exhibitions, artistic endeavors and community connections. Forty Years highlights the rigorous energy and tremendous dedication that grew a regional art space into an internationally recognized gallery that has presented over 800 exhibitions to date.
