Please join us on Monday, November 15th at 6:30 pm for Prison Pipeline on KBOO Community Radio as we talk with Marianna Bernal about her campaign to free her brother, Steven Bernal, who has served twenty years for a crime he didn't commit.   Steven Bernal, was 2 weeks away from joining the United States Marine Corps when he was arrested for armed robbery.  Although he was not a participant in an armed robbery, he was convicted and sentenced to 32 years in prison because he was a homeless youth who was living in a house with known gang affiliation.

Steven Bernal's case which is under review by the California Innocence Project and the LA District attorney is just one of thousands of convictions from the height California's harsh sentencing laws. Steven was affected like many black and brown youth with harsh lengthy sentencing instead of real reforms to change behaviors.   In addition to the 20 year sentence for a crime he did not commit, he was given another 12 years known gang affiliation, due to being arrested in a known gang house.

While he has always maintained his innocence and other participants who were arrested at the same time as Steven Bernal have said he was not involved in the robbery, he is still in prison after 20 years, having spent his entire adult life in jail.  Recently Steven B had his initial parole hearing after having served 2/3 of his sentence and he was denied parole.  Marianna Bernal is urging elected officials to take another look at his case.

Prison Pipeline is a radio program dedicated to educating the public about the Oregon criminal justice system. Our goal is to present a unique understanding of the criminal justice system, address the root causes of crime, and challenge the status quo. We seek to promote awareness and activism in order to foster a safe, healthy, and just society. Tune in every Monday at 6:30 P.M. to hear our hosts Karen James, Adam Carpinelli, Amy Johnson, Emma Lugo, Doug McVay, and Isabelle Sinclar explore the Oregon justice system with a variety of guests.
