National Day of Empathy is an opportunity to uplift and amplify voices of people impacted by the criminal legal system. Oregon’s Day of Empathy is at noon, Tues, March 2nd. Oregon’s virtual event will include women directly impacted by our criminal legal system who will discuss the role of empathy with lawmakers and law enforcement. KBOO's Karen James speaks with Jessica Katz and Nova Sweet of the Family Preservation Project, an organization that connects incarcerated mothers with their children; and Louis L. Reed, with Dream Corps Justice, the organizer of the National Day of Empathy. Dream Corps JUSTICE is a bipartisan effort to cut crime and incarceration across all 50 states and brings together leaders impacted by the criminal justice system with unlikely allies spanning the political divide to push for criminal justice solutions.
Oregon Day of Empathy includes panels moderated by award-winning authors Cheryl Strayed and Robin Romm. Special guests: Brian Lindstrom, who will introduce and screen his short documentary film, “Like a Shield”; Carson Ellis Award-winning Author and Illustrator; newly elected Multnomah County District Attorney, Mike Schmidt; Rabbi Ariel Stone convener of the Portland Interfaith Clergy Resistance, and musical guest Colin Meloy of the Decemberists.
