General Description: Provide leadership for all programming at KBOO. To assure quality radio programming that meets the goals of the KBOO Foundation. To implement the programming goals of the KBOO Board of Directors and the Programming Advisory Committee. This position is a member of and leads the Program Operating Team.
Qualifications
Minimum of two years experience in community or public radio
Experience in program development
Experience in supervision of personnel
Experience in training and/or production skills
Ability to administer department including the development and implementation of policies, procedures, preparation of reports, etc.
Knowledge of variety of musical styles and traditions, public affairs, and news
Demonstrated excellence in live programming and production
Ability to work with a wide variety of people in a multicultural organization
Experience supervising volunteers and ability to articulate criticism and support
Ability to speak Spanish helpful
Computer skills
Essential Functions
Identify and address institutional and individual acts of oppression at KBOO. Ensure there is interruption of the oppression, follow-up and support for those impacted as well as documentation/record keeping of the incident
Oversee, coordinate and implement all KBOO programming
Final decision authority for all programming working cooperatively with news and public affairs directors and with assistance from the Programming Advisory Committee
Audition, initiation, scheduling, development and evaluation of programming and training of programmers in cooperation with the Program Advisory Committee (PAC)
Ensure non-technical legal broadcast operation of KBOO, including logs, EBS, obscenity rulings, etc.
To provide programming information for the program guide. the KBOO website/social media, newsletters, etc.
Supervise scheduling of air shift operators including substitutions
Oversee and approve programming changes (pre-emptions, remote broadcasts, etc.)
Oversee KBOO remote broadcasts in collaboration with the engineering dept
Manage the quality of the record music library and tape archives
Supervise response to listener comments on programming
Order programs from outside sources
Provide direction and leadership to Public Affairs dept and News dept
Work to implement KBOO’s Affirmative Action policy
Attend and provide leadership for the PAC in developing new and innovative programming
Make programming and scheduling changes with input from PAC
Participate in volunteer training in cooperation with other staff
Pre-empt scheduled programming for special public affairs and music programs (with input from news and public affairs directors) and provide adequate notice to affected individuals
Request engineering and equipment repairs. Submit engineering and equipment repair orders, working closely with the engineer.
Recommend probationary loss of a programmers’ air time for just cause
Remove a programmer from the air due to violations of rules
Develop a programming budget and have input in equipment budgeting
Assist with pledge drive as necessary
Attend staff meetings
Schedule promos for airplay
Conduct program evaluations on a regular basis with assistance from the PAC
Maintain on-air programmer contracts
Other duties applicable to the programming department as assigned
Salary
This is a full-time position of 40 hrs a week with a starting salary of $15.56/hr. The employee shall be eligible for annual step increases subject to conditions in KBOO’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Probationary Period
Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the first six-months of employment are probationary.

This position also offers paid vacation, sick leave, and 11 paid holidays per year, in accordance with KBOO’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. FSLA-exempt employees receive paid compensatory time off. Eligibility for the pension plan is one year after the date of hire.
Working Conditions
KBOO has 13 paid employees and over 300 volunteers. The Program Director interacts regularly with volunteer programmers and partners of KBOO. Ability to teach, listen, and create boundaries with a diverse group of people is a required part of maintaining an environment that supports the people both inside and outside of the station. As a radio station that is live 24 hrs a day, flexibity in hours may be required in order to address emergencies or pressing issues that must be handled immediately.
