Marc de Giere, Web Assistant
WebsiteBy the time some of you read this, a new visual update should be live. In it, our main navigation menu has moved to the top of each page. This menu includes links to some new pages, including new pages focusing on music, public affairs, podcasts, playlists, and media training.
As the new visual format of the site is developing, it is moving more in the direction of a blog. The front page is now continuously being updated with new content in the form of teasers of news and recent audio. The interest our users have in the website depends on it’s content having visual appeal. This is why I am proposing a new effort to make our front page content engaging.
I’ll be meeting with some specific programmers to get them started with their own blogs that will be separate written content. This will draw in interest from web users who follow commentary and opinion blogs.
While our homepage will now focus less on KBOO “station business”, we’re still increasing capacity for this in other areas of the site. I’ve met with the board and some committee members to teach them how to start posting minutes and other content related to their groups.
We have now picked our final logo draft and are working with the designer to hone a final version. With this completed we will move on to contracting a new visual theme for the website.
October and early November has seen some surprising incidents where the website was down or the database was not loading correctly. Some of these resulted in lost content. Roger is looking into these.
Our NFCB lawyer Melodie has sent me draft legal forms we can use to be granted permission to . We also have been given new forms for recording work so I will be using this to replace our old form.
For a project of this magnitude to move forward, we need to increase KBOO’s capacity – both in terms of but also staffing. This is why I am proposing the creation of the new position of Online Music Coordinator. This is an official volunteer position, similar to that of the music directors, that will be able to show leadership and devote energy to innovate ways listeners can interact with our music.
Likewise, I will be looking to create a counterpart position for our public affairs. This position would work with sites like Public Radio Exchange to help syndicate KBOO’s shows to other stations and provide a new source of income.
I am also pursuing clarification on our ability to use digital images on our website under fair use and public domain laws.
There are a few prospective volunteers I will be meeting with in the coming week or so. There are other volunteers that have been on hiatus and I will be checking in with them. As I mention in the section above, I plan on creating some new “official” volunteer positions.
In addition to our plan to increase our use the audio distribution site PRX.org, we are also using the web to promote KBOO’s presence in Willamette Week’s Give Guide fund drive, which runs through December. As of November 17th this effort had raised $360.
We continue to get positive responses to the bulletin, including a respected publisher remarking that it was the coolest thing he had ever seen. As of 11/5, almost 100 people clicked through the email link to the website, many to our elections coverage. We’ve had less people mark us as spam than in recent months, but I will be meeting with Andrew to discuss how we can prevent this.
People signing up for trainings continue to decline, as these are mostly new volunteers. Rebecca will be scheduling a podcasting class once our podcast feeds go live.
There are still about 32 programs that have virtually no web presence; these are highlighted dark in the table. Some of these have been trained but have not followed-through while others are hosts who have been contacted but have not responded. Chris sends reminders of our new programmer requirements in his emails to all programmers.
I’m hoping to find a volunteer to focus on working with our latino/a programmers.

We continue to make record numbers in our website statistic as October brings a jump in both visitors and page view. However we see less of these visits stay on the site. The site going down for notable periods accounts for some of this.
November looks promising as well - with some record numbers of visitors on Election Day, we’re continuing to ride the wave of traffic in the week following. Overall, we’re seeing the minimum level of traffic each day increase.
I now have numbers to use for tracking our online memberships so for October we can see the results of the second part of the drive.
