Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) Portland Hawthorne Hostel is having its Ninth Annual Bike-In Movie event on Saturday August 18, 2012. This event will feature seven short films from around the world on traveling by bicycle, along with live music by Portland’s own Greenish Grey.

Each year since 2004 the HI-USA Portland Hawthorne Hostel has hosted a unique celebration of all things bicycles with our Bike-In Movie event. It brings together travelers staying in our hostel with local bicycle enthusiasts, families, and members of the neighborhood. At the Hawthorne Hostel we support bicycle travel as a fellow aid for independent travelers to sustainably venture forth and connect with other communities.

This year’s Bike-In Movie short films showcase how bicycle travel is both empowering and exhausting; pushing the boundaries of experience as travelers discover the connection to the road and their journey. This event is free and open to all. There will be food and drink available along with a bike themed raffle thanks to generous donations from the Hawthorne community. The evening’s festivities will kick off with a performance by Greenish Grey, a local group of bluegrass, folk rock musicians. Speaking before the movie will be Mia Birk, author of Joyride and a leader in the American urban biking movement.
