Voices in Action: Human Rights on Film

This fall the Northwest Film Center presents its annual “Voices in Action: Human Rights on Film” series, an eleven-film showcase of contemporary documentaries which explore with depth and sensitivity the many political, social, and environmental issues — from racism and genocide to gay and immigrant rights — that we face in the world today.
While for some cinema is a means of entertainment and escape, for many committed filmmakers and viewers, it is a vital medium of engagement and a powerful tool for social action. Tackling wide-ranging, thought-provoking issues, activist filmmakers help deepen our awareness of injustice and the values of dignity and equality as they tell universal stories of struggle and triumph. The eleven films in this year’s series are presented in the hopes that they inform, inspire, broaden understanding, and stimulate involvement, as they reveal the commitment and courage of individuals whose hearts and minds are focused on the many challenges confronting humanity.
Many of the screenings in the “Voices in Action: Human Rights on film” series are complemented with visiting artists, speakers, and guest performances. Khmer Rouge genocide survivor Kilong Ung will lead a post-film discussion at ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE on September 30. Former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury will introduce GERRYMANDERING on October 3. The children of the Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association will perform traditional Tibetan songs and dances at TIBET IN SONG on October 6. Finally, several visiting directors will be in attendance to introduce their films, including Greg Barker (SERGIO, October 7), Michael Nash (CLIMATE REFUGEES, October 17), Esther Podemski (THE PEASANT AND THE PRIEST, October 21), and Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer (OUT IN THE SILENCE, November 4).
