Selver's work often blends personal narratives with broader cultural and social issues, capturing the complexities of human experiences. She has been involved in various independent film projects and has contributed significantly to the field of documentary filmmaking, particularly with an emphasis on storytelling that brings attention to overlooked or marginalized perspectives.

We will be discussing the landmark 1977 film, "Word is Out."

"Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives" is a 1977 documentary film directed by Nancy Adair, Andrew Brown, and others. The film is notable for being one of the first to openly address the lives and stories of gay individuals in the United States. It features interviews with 26 people from various backgrounds, exploring their personal experiences with sexuality, coming out, and their struggles and triumphs in a society that was often hostile to LGBTQ+ individuals.

The film's structure is unique in that it allows the subjects to speak for themselves in a straightforward, candid manner, offering a powerful insight into the lives of gay men and women during a time when their stories were rarely represented in mainstream media.

"Word Is Out" is considered an important historical and cultural document that helped pave the way for greater visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in film and society at large. It played a significant role in the gay rights movement by giving a voice to those who had been marginalized or silenced.
