APA Compass

APA Compass is a collectively produced public affairs program. Our mission is to provide a forum for dialogue, exploration, and dissemination of issues pertinent to Asian Pacific American (APA) communities; to unite, politicize and empower APAs; to raise awareness of social and economic justice issues; to highlight the parallels and intersections between APA experiences and the experiences of other groups; to provide media access, mentorship and training to APAs; to promote APA art and culture; to challenge racist representations and to enable APAs to define themselves.

APA Compass interviews Gary Okhiro
Gary Okhiro is professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University, and receipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Studies Association. He is known for his writing, teaching, and institution building in Asian American Studies. In this interview with APA Compass' Andrew Yeh, Professor Okihiro speaks about the post September 11th environment, the bullying of APAs, and the unexpected influence of Hawaiians on the mainland.

Ariko Iso: Breaking Barriers
Ariko Iso is Oregon State University Football's head athletic trainer. Though the Beavers' season has sadly come to an end, Iso will stay busy working with student-athletes in the off-season. Iso was the first and only female athletic trainer to work in the NFL, leaving a nine-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers to return to her alma mater.

DJ Phatrick: Inspiring Youth in Los Angeles

Ying-Ying Chang, author of "The Woman Who Could Not Forget"
Author Ying-Ying Chang speaks with Luann Algoso from APA Compass. Ying-Ying's book, "The Woman Who Could Not Forget", is an inspring memoir of her late daughter, Iris Chang. Iris was a celebrated Asian-American human rights activist and the author of the international bestseller, “The Rape of Nanking." Ying-Ying speaks frankly about Iris' strong stands against racial profiling by the US government, mental health taboos within the APA community, and efforts to put Asian-American history into our high school curriculum. Ying-Ying's interview is articulate, heartfelt, and moving.

Manvee Vaid on Indian Folk Art
Manvee Vaid is a practicing artist and curator of Indian Art based out of Chicago, Illinois. She experiments with various art media ranging from acrylic, oils, gold gilding and faux finishing to murals. She has a bachelors in fine arts from Sir JJ school of Arts, Mumbai India. Manvee is passionate about Indian folk art – an art form that is less known in the contemporary art scene. Her collection, which includes works from presidential award winners to up-and-coming artists, has been displayed at several universities including the University of Chicago. You can learn more about her work at her website and her blog. Sarika Mehta spoke to her about the importance of India's contemporary folk art scene.
