church sex-abuse, public not private goods, movie moles: tree of life, reading from the left press

On the next Old Mole, Tom Becker hosts and we hear:

  • Bill Resnick interviews Thomas Doyle, a Catholic priest of the Domincan order who spoke out against sex-abuse in the Church and how it handled it long before the mainstream press picked it up. They consider the recent claim by US Catholic Bishops that the free-love ethos of the 1960s is to blame for clergy's lack of sexual discipline: not only is this absurd in its own right, but obfuscates how it was the explosion of political consciousness in all quarters that led to more people speaking out against sex-abuse and more.
  • Laurie Mercier Robert Weissman of Public Citizen about how government can play a role in creating a more democratic and just economy, creating more public good at less cost through taking over what now are private operations, such as health care, transportation, banking, green energy, etc.
  • Joe Clement and Denise Morris talk about Terrance Malik's new film, "The Tree of Life", which explores the precariousness of authoritarian masculinity in (1950s) American culture alongside other abstract themes on the genesis of life.
  • Tom reads from the Left press.
