Words cannot describe the connections between points on a 3-D timepiece...
1, The ARMY CORP will be joining DEQ at their meetings scheduled across Southern Oregon starting in Coos Bay on Jan 14th... PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THESE MEETINGS where you will be given information on what the agencies are needing and looking for in regards to comments. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! And with all the local talent brouhaha , let's let Cheryly Strayed know that if she loves this part of the world as much as she says she does - and after all the money she has made - then perhaps she ought to break a little of it all off in the name of saving remote rivers, streams and shores…
2, Utah prosecutors are dropping charges against four animal activists filed under a controversial law known as “ag-gag.” The activists from California and Maryland will still each face one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass. Prosecutors received the case after the four activists pleaded not guilty last week. The charges being dropped came under a law that makes it a crime to conduct undercover investigations of slaughterhouses and factory farms. It’s being challenged by activists who say it was designed to prevent exposure of unsafe practices.
3,
Reem Khalifa a courageous journalist in Bahrain, said this: "We have 12 freelance photojournalists in jail. Only three of them were convicted -- one is serving 10 years. Many were tortured. The camera is a tool that the government of Bahrain fears. In 2011 publisher Karim Fakhrawi was tortured until death. In 2012, Ahmed Ismail was killed by a gun while he was filming. ... Human rights defender Nabeel Rajab, who was in jail for posting a tweet criticized the prime minister and minister of interior. Now after spending two years in jail, Rajab was released and he is facing another trial and verdict to come on Jan. 20." We are pulling out the stops to get her back on Air Cascadia.
4, Last Wednesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon announced that Palestine would become a member of the International Criminal Court on April 1. That same day, Sen. Rand Paul introduced legislation to cut off US aid to the Palestinian Authority— about $400 million a year—if the Palestinians don’t withdraw their application to join the ICC. [1] And on Friday, Sens. Lindsey Graham, Chuck Schumer, Bob Menendez, and Mark Kirk released a statement saying that the Palestinian decision to join the ICC was “deplorable, counterproductive, and will be met with a strong response by the United States Congress.” And now comes the Charlie Ebdo fiasco. If this doesn’t set the Israelis off…And of course Bibi is making hay on the PR end of things. They are shameless – but no less so than America’s contribution to idiocy and violence.
5, This comes from he indefatigable Dan Handleman: COMMENTS on Citizen Review Committee Crowd Control Report
(being presented to City Council Wednesday, January 14)
from Portland Copwatch
January 13, 2015
Members of City Council:
Portland Copwatch (PCW) is extremely concerned that after hearing from demonstrators, lawyers, members of the public and from PCW about the use of weapons at protests-- including batons, pepper spray, horses, and bicycles-- the Citizen Review Committee's Crowd Control report does not even mention these items. Their Work Group had promised to at least mention the weapons in an "other concerns raised during our process" section. While many of the recommendations they make are on point and productive, it is the use of violence that most concerns our group and many people who have witnessed or been subjected to that violence over the many years we've been active.
We also had hoped Tasers would be addressed although we're not aware of Taser use at protest actions to date, they are allowed by the current and proposed revised policies (and should not be). We repeatedly suggested CRC recommend banning the use of all of these weapons, and though there was discussion on the idea, that discussion is not reflected in the document.
