Joe Clement* talks with Zak Wear of Fair and Affordable Richmond. He was the campaign manager of Measure L, a ballot measure that passed in the November election of last year, thereby establishing rent-control and eliminating no-cause evictions. They talk about what the ordinance entails, why it had to be passed as Measure L, the arguments for and against it, and how rent-control and the housing crisis is misrepresented by landlords. In the extended conversation, they talk a bit more about the role of nonprofits like Fair and Affordable Housing and tenants themselves in fighting for more effective rent-controls.
*Joe Clement is a member of Portland Tenants United, a tenant union supporting tenant organizing and fighting for rent-control and eviction-control through direct action and other community pressure.
