Larry Bowlden reviews the Harlem Renaissance novel by Nella Larsen
Quicksand (1928), a novel by Harlem Renaissance writer Nella Larsen, describes the befuddlement of a young woman whose mother is Danish and whose father is African-American. She feels at home neither in America nor in Denmark, and finally suffers through an existential-crisis conversion to Christianity only to find that religion is not the answer. By the time she begins to consider a more rebellious reaction to racial oppression, she has five children and is slowly drowning in quicksand. Book mole Larry Bowlden reviews it here; some of his other reviews can be found at this link.
