Joseph Gallivan interviews John Olbrantz about A Contemporary Bestiary at Willamette University
On Tuesday November 4, 2014, at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews John Olbrantz the Director of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem about the current group show "A Contemporary Bestiary, which runs now through December 21.
Olbrantz  will talk about why animal art never gets old. He discusses specific northwest artists in the show, the historical significance of animal art, and the collective nouns like a murder of crows and a congregation of alligators.

A Contemporary Bestiary features work by artists from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia who incorporate animal imagery in their artwork as a means to address a wide variety of issues. Organized by Director John Olbrantz, the exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, ceramics, and photography by artists Rick Bartow, Rachel Denny, Alfredo Arreguin, Mark Calderon, Fay Jones, Robert McCauley, Sherry Markovitz, and Robert Davidson, among others. The exhibition opens September 13 and continues through December 21, 2014, in the Maribeth Collins Lobby and Melvin Henderson-Rubio Gallery.
The exhibition features 56 objects on loan from public and private collections throughout the region, including a number of objects from the permanent collection of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. A wide variety of animals are represented, including Frank Boyden birds, David Gilhooly frogs, Gaylen Hansen fish and dogs, Ed Wicklander cats, Ted Wadell cattle, and Deborah Butterfield horses. In addition to the objects on display, the exhibition features a text panel, quotes from the artists, object labels, and quotes from James Lipton’s book An Exaltation of Larks.
 
 
John Olbrantz is currently the Maribeth Collins Director of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University. A native of Washington, he holds a BA degree from Western Washington University and an MA degree from the University of Washington in the history of art, and a Study Certificate from the University of California, Berkeley in arts administration and management. In addition, he did further graduate study at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A specialist in ancient and American art, he is particularly interested in Roman art, the history of archaeology, contemporary American art, and the history of museums.
 
Joseph Gallivan has been a reporter since 1990. He has covered music for the London Independent, Technology for the New York Post, and arts and culture for the Portland Tribune. He is the author of two novels, "Oi, Ref!" and "England All Over" which are available on Amazon.com
