Interview w/Dr. Moreland-Capuia irt Healing Hurt People
Join me on Thursday for a conversation about an innovative violence prevention program. Healing Hurt People (HHP) Portland, which is a partnership between Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare Inc. and Legacy Emanuel Hospital. HHP Portland is a trauma-informed hospital-based community focused violence prevention program that serves young males of color between the ages of 10-25 who’ve suffered from a penetrating trauma. It takes a public health approach to addressing the disease of violence. Specific outcomes obtained thus far include: reduction in repeat emergency room visits, reduction in retaliation, reduction in re-injury, reduction in re-arrest and reduction in the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in this young population. I will speak with Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia a native Oregonian, who built, implemented and employed this national violence prevention program. Join us as we discuss this innovative approach to violence reduction, Portland’s program is one of several demonstration projects across the country. What are the opportunities and challenges in Portland? We will talk about the team that are working with these young people. Dr. Moreland-Capuia attended Kings School, in NE Portland, Harriet Tubman Middle School and Jefferson High School. She graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and Minor in Urban Studies in June, 2002.
